Why I Changed Careers at 38

When my daughter was born, I had my first panic attack. Not the kind that’s “OMG I’ve copied the client in this email” kind, the kind that makes your chest tighten, your mind race, and your world shrink to one terrifying thought: what if I don’t get to see her grow up?
At the time, there were complications that thankfully never materialised. But I had to leave my wife and newborn in the hospital overnight, feeling utterly helpless. That fear of absence, of missing moments that can never be repeated, has stuck with me ever since.
Fast forward a few years, and life had another way of testing me. A pulled shoulder, a family holiday, and a ridiculously large black coffee later, I found myself convinced I was having a heart attack. I ended up in A&E, visiting hospitals multiple times over the next two months, terrified I was dying.
That period brought more than panic; it brought compulsions. Saying goodnight in exactly the right way, checking the locks endlessly, making sure my daughter was “safe” creating routines and rituals I couldn’t escape. Stress and life made these behaviours worse, and I realised I had two options: let fear control me, or find a way to manage it.
That’s where fitness became more than a hobby. I didn’t go to the gym for abs. I went to feel calm, to regulate, to survive. Every session wasn’t just about strength; it was about reclaiming my life.
Why I Became a Personal Trainer

I loved recruitment. I loved helping people find jobs, watching someone land a new role, the satisfaction of changing lives in small but meaningful ways. But over time, I realised the corporate path I was on wasn’t aligned with who I wanted to be. Recruiters aren’t always respected in business, and opportunities felt limited without travelling hours every day. Quietly, I was falling out of love with the profession.
Then last year, I had the chance to rethink everything. I could take six months off, explore possibilities, and finally ask myself the question I’d been avoiding: If anything were possible, what would I do?
The answer? Combine two things I’ve loved my whole life: fitness and helping people. AC Personal Training was born.
What Being a “Strong Dad” Really Means
Strength isn’t just about lifting heavy things… although, yes, I still occasionally carry my 13 year old daughter upstairs because I can, and it’s one of the most satisfying things in life. Strength is freedom, movement, confidence, and the ability to live life fully.
Being a dad and husband means time is precious, and most parents tell themselves they don’t have time for fitness. Here’s the truth: you can’t have time if you don’t make time.
That’s why I help people break down what “fitness” even means for them. Forget the perfect athlete, 20 year old with no responsibilities version of a workout. We reshape fitness into something that fits your life, even three 30 minute bodyweight sessions a week can change your body and mind.
The Lessons I Want Every Busy Adult to Know
Consistency beats perfection. Something is always better than nothing. You don’t need a perfect week. You don’t need to start again when you miss a session.
Strength is functional, not aesthetic. The ability to move freely, protect yourself and your loved ones, and feel confident matters more than flexing in the mirror.
Life is messy. You can’t control everything, and trying to leads to anxiety and obsession. Focus on what you can control; your effort, your choices, your mindset.
I’ve learned all this the hard way, through panic attacks, compulsions, and life-changing reflection. And now, I get to pass it on to clients every day - helping them show up, feel strong, and reclaim control in a way that works for their real lives.
Stop Being So Scared of Losing Time
Stop worrying about missing time so much that you actually miss it. Strength isn’t about perfection, it’s about showing up. Fitness isn’t about the ideal; it’s about what’s possible. And life? Life is too short to wait until tomorrow to make it count.
If you want to learn how to make fitness work in your life - not the other way around - that’s what AC:COACH is for, my online coaching service. Realistic, sustainable, and completely tailored to you.
Because at the end of the day, the goal isn’t just abs or muscle. It’s presence. It’s connection. It’s being able to lift your daughter upstairs, play with her, protect her, and still be there tomorrow to do it all again.
